Currently, I have a Windows 2008 Server x64 SP2 Enterprise Edition
Failover Cluster with 3 nodes (2 active and 1 passive). Our current
processor manufacturer is AMD, and the line we are using is the
Opteron 8380 (quad core processors). We are considering upgrading our
nodes from this quad core architecture to Opteron 8439 hex core
architecture. However, we want to make sure that there isn't any
reason this won't work properly. Previous to Windows 2008 Server, I
know there was a lot of concern about mis-matching hardware in a
failover cluster setting.
Currently, things have loosened a bit from the reading I've done and,
as far as I know, if it passes the Failover Cluster Validation Test
Microsoft will support it.
Unfortunately, we're not in a position to make the acquisition just to
try it out. Does anyone know if quad core and hex core processors from
the same manufacturer will play nicely in the same Failover Cluster?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
